1984 was a big year in British music – and several of the number ones 1984 in the UK came from one band who ended up dominating the charts for much of the year. The Christmas number one in 1984 was also significant, as it’s still one of the most-played hits during December every year – and one of the most memorable tunes of the 80s.

There were 15 1984 number ones in the UK – less than during some of the preceding and following years. This is because various number one songs in 1984 were so successful that they held the top spot for weeks on end.

In fact a couple of the best-selling singles of 1984 in the UK held onto their place at the top of the charts for 6 weeks – and one track managed to stay there for a whopping 9 weeks.

One number 1 song of 1984 in the UK is a tune I remember in particular, as my dad offered to buy me a single while shopping one day when I was 10, and after hearing it on the radio I plumped for this cheerful ditty. The sleeve was very colourful too.

What do you think of the number ones 1984?

What do you make of the UK number ones in 1984? I owned a few of these as 7 inch vinyl singles – Band Aid (who didn’t?), 99 Red Balloons and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. The latter was the one my dad bought me one Saturday, even though he probably didn’t regard it as ‘proper music’.

I once wrote a piece on picking a first dance wedding tune, and my choice was The Power of Love by FGTH, a number one song in 1984 – even if only for a week. They fared far better with Relax and Two TribesTwo Tribes was in pole position for 9 weeks, and Relax did well with 5 weeks considering it was banned by the BBC for its suggestive lyrics.
