1987 – number one songs in the UK that year include a couple of duets, as well as two hits that topped the singles chart for five weeks each. One of these 80s hits is running through my head on repeat right now…

The UK number one songs of 1987 also include a charity single, a track from a popular film and something a little Latin in style. Two of these 1987 top songs also came from one band, and there’s a connection with the music magazine Smash Hits there – as well as the part of the world I come from.

I’d forgotten all about the number one song in 1987 that was top when I turned 13 early in the year, that’s for sure. Nor had I remembered that a certain girl duo had done better than merely scoring one of the 1987 top ten songs – they actually were in pole position for a week. One of them, bless her, is no longer with us.

Here they are – all 20 of the 1987 hit songs in the UK that actually made it to the top of the singles chart. Whether or not they were 1987’s best songs is simply a matter of personal preference.

What do you think of the 1987 number one songs?

Well that’s it – every UK number 1 of 1987. Two for the Pet Shop Boys, and a couple for acts that to me sound more 90s than 80s – but I guess we are in the late 80s at this point and music does gradually morph rather than suddenly.

If you were wondering what was the number one song in 1987 when your child was born, for example, hopefully this list will help!
