Could you correctly name any of the 1980 number one songs UK, should a related question come up during a pop quiz? As I was not quite seven at the time, I’m not sure I could.

Having covered the top 100 80s songs as well as the best selling albums and most popular artists and favourite bands of the 80s, my attention now turns to those musicians who scored a number one during the first year – 1980.

This list details all the 1980 number one songs in the UK – from the tune that opened the decade to what was the Christmas number one in 1980.

What do you think of the 1980 number one songs UK?

What do you make of this list? It was certainly Blondie’s year with 3 number ones in 1980 – and Abba and The Jam didn’t do badly either with 2.

What strikes me is how many artists still popular today are featured. From Bowie to John Lennon, Pink Floyd and The Pretenders, there are some true 80s classics that made the top spot in 1980. All-time classics, in fact.
