Hot on the heels of my posts on the 1980 and 1981 number ones, this is all the 1982 number one songs in the UK. In total there were 25 singles that held the top position in 1980 and 20 in 1981. What did 1982 have in store – and who for during this year of the 80s?

The preceding years were big for Adam and the Ants, John Lennon, ABBA, Shakin’ Stevens, Blondie and The Jam in particular. But how did they fare in 1982?

Find out all the answers about the hot 1982 songs in the UK below. Some might surprise you; others, not so much. It’s not spoiling things to say that three of the aforementioned acts reached numero uno once more – and there were of course some one hit wonders. The top 100 singles of the 80s list contains a few of these tunes too.

I was 8 in 1982, and owned three of these hits on 7 inch vinyl. That’s all, at this stage, that I’m saying… oh that and the fact that I used to jump off chairs, arms akimbo, screeching the title, with my classmates at the school disco while July’s biggest smash was played.

Let’s take a look at the rundown. This is what topped the UK music charts in 1982, by week.

What do you think of the 1982 number one songs UK?

There you go – the 1982 top songs here in the UK. At age 8, I owned a few of those as 7 inch singles, and they weren’t the coolest choices, I’m afraid. Though these days I prefer The Jam, Culture Club, The Human League and Madness, then it was Shakin’ Stevens, Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Tight Fit’s singles I owned.

By the end of 1982, three German acts – Kraftwerk, the Goombay Dance Band and Nicole – had scored a UK number one, though they’d had none previously in the 29 years since the singles chart began.

The Jam and Bucks Fizz did well again, with more than one number one song in 1982 apiece. There were a few one hit wonders among these 1982 hit songs too.
