This list of the 1999 number one songs in the UK is the last in the series which began with 1980. Making this the 20th and final countdown of the number one songs of the 90s – and 80s. For this is a site focusing on music from those two decades.

So what was number 1 in the charts in 1999? There were 36 1999 UK number ones – more than in any other year I’ve covered. I guess everyone wanted to make history before a new century began.

UK number 1 singles of 1999 included tracks released by boy and girl bands, the ‘King of Latin pop’, a big new female star from the US and one of the Kings of UK Christmas hits. While there were so many 1999 number one songs, the singles chart was dominated by pop. No Britpop, however, for the top spot that year.

Three weeks was the longest any one act managed, from all the 1999 number ones. Three acts managed that, while the rest of the UK number ones in 1999 enjoyed just one week or a fortnight in pole position.

Let’s make a start. Here’s every number one song of 1999, here in the UK.

Well there you go – the 1999 hit songs that reached the top in the UK. Lots of boy bands in there, right? My favourites of these 1999 popular songs are by The Offspring, Lou Bega, Fatboy Slim, Ricky Martin and Blondie.

There were a lot of 1999 top songs, that’s for sure – more than during any other year of the decade.
